Welcome Parents, Teachers and Students

Welcome to Georgia On My Mind! I am your host, Mr. Anthony Shelton and I am excited to start the school year at the best middle school in Columbus, on the best team in the school (801 second to none)! This year we are blessed to have magnet students on our team. I look forward to working with them while seizing opportunities to challenge all of our students in the area of Georgia Studies.

Parents I am grateful for the opportunity to work with you as well. I would like to establish an open line of communication that will allow a continuous flow of information as to keep you informed of your child's weekly progress and assist me in teaching your child. This is where e-mail comes in. We need your e-mail addresses. This is an easy way we may accomplish our communication goals regarding your child's Georgia Studies experience. My email address is ashelton@mcsdga.net. Reading is essential in this class and I assign reading almost every day. Please parents, we need your support in this area. The more reading students do the better their chances they will have in passing the course and the CRCT. Not only are we here to challenge them academically, we are here to assist your children in their growth and development as they transition through the eight grade.

My mission is to present your child(ren) with the necessary knowledge, and understanding to earn passing scores throughout this course. My responsibility is to provide opportunities for each student to become lifelong learners and to pass the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in April 2011. In order to complete this task your child must master 24 standards based in the economics, history, geography, and civics of the state of Georgia. U.S, historical events are included, as appropriate, to ensure students understand Georgia's role in the history of the United States. See the standard below:

SS8G1 The student will describe Georgia with regard to physical features and location.
a. Locate Georgia in relation to region, nation, continent, and hemispheres [pp. 5-8].
b. Describe the five geographic regions of Georgia; include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain [pp. 9-20].
c. Locate and evaluate the importance of key physical features on the development of Georgia; include the Fall Line [p. 21], Okefenokee Swamp [pp. 34-35], Appalachian Mountains [p. 15], Chattahoochee [pp. 63-64] and Savannah [p. 62] Rivers, and barrier islands [p. 20]. d. Evaluate the impact of climate on Georgia’s development [pp. 22-30].

For the past two weeks your children have been learning the geography of our great state and will be ready to take Chapter 1 test, "Where in the World is Georgia". In order to past the test on Friday, August 28, 2009, they must have mastered SS8G1 (Social Studies, Eighth Grade, Geography #1).

I am confident that our students will do extremely well on the test and the scores will reflect how well ECMA's eighth graders will do on the CRCT in April.

Again, It is a privilege to be a teacher at East Columbus and I am honored that you have allowed our school to guide, instruct and mentor your child through Georgia's past, present, and future. Welcome.
